This is a letter my mother recently found in her genealogy research information from a correspondence with a potential cousin more than 30 years ago. It is from Olena Adams in Elijay, Ga. to Barbara Sellars Davis in Erwin, TN. Date: Nov. 6 1981

Marcella Davis-Burks, Charlotte, NC- Archives of Barbara Davis Sellars

Hi Barbara,

Sorry to be so late in answering your last letter, but when you run an apple orchard my time is consumed by it, and other work.

You asked if I had found any more info. In the Family Search, I’ve gotten back to working on it again. I made another trip to NC over into Burke Co. N.C. where I found help in the public library there, in Land grants, to John Sellers, back in 1779 (grant). He was granted 300 acres along with (sp?) Glode Creek then then later, Robert Sellers, 1795 (grant) – James 1799 (grant), which are the names that run in our family. Then they seem to drift westward – where John Sellers, Issac Sellers, Coorod or Conrad, Joseph show up in Haywood Co.

Barbara, you said your great-grandfather was born 1824, and you did not know where he was born?  I was talking with John Sellers who lives in Canton NC today, and he mentioned a great uncle of his who went to Spartanburg SC years ago. (corrected to John Powell Sellers by Carolyn Sellars Walker) I was thrilled to know of him. John said John P. was his grandfather’s brother, his grandfather was James Leonard Sellers . This gets back to where I figured he would probably fit in, but I had nothing concrete to suggest to you that he was probably in the family. Maybe this is on the right track, if John is sure what we are talking about.

A John (Powell ) Sellers is the son of black-smith John Sellers, of Dutch Cove, Haywood Co. NC. I have a list of other brothers and sisters. (Never saw that - MDB) John said he had heard his grandfather talk about a brother going to SC, one brother went to Mt. Airy Georgia – around Toccoa Ga. Have you heard anything about those? (We think another Sellers relative went to Texas and donated land for a courthouse – MDB)

John Sellers is supposed to send me some copies of what he has on his research. I can tell you more then, when he gets info to me. Which I am counting on receiving very much. (No info was forwarded to Barbara Sellars Davis – MDB) John said that someone has the Dutch Bible in their family yet, and he is waiting to get the names and dates out of the Bible from someone. He said that the Bible was brought down from Penn. With _____

From the man called by Sellers in NC. As black–smith John, he is buried on his home place in Dutch Cove.

Barbara, I hope we can find out soon.

Please write, Regards, Olena J.(?) Adams

Marcella:   That great Uncle's name was John Powell Sellers and not John Calvin Sellers.   Our John Calvin Sellers was a son of John Henry Sellers who went to Appling County, Georgia.  Carole Sellers Walker

Marcella:  John "Blacksmith" Sellers was one of my great great great grandfathers.  I have forwarded your letter on to some of my cousins to see if we can make a connection to John "Blacksmith" Sellers line.  I sure hope we can.  Carole Sellers Walker

Hi Marcella,

In looking through this letter, I'm not sure exactly how your lines may
intersect with mine. My Sellers family did come from
Pennsylvania to
North Carolina, but the dates/locations don't match up. We know that
George Sellers and his brother John moved to Lincoln County, NC in the
1790s, and George also had a son named John, but both these John
Sellers are pretty well accounted for.

The elder John seems to have died without surviving children, since he
left everything to his nephew John and another nephew (not conclusive
proof he had no children, but very likely).

George's son John is the right age to be the father of your John
Calvin, however he is fairly well documented. He married Mary Rush
2
December 1818
, had at least four children (including George born 1824
in
Lincoln County), and moved to Macon County sometime between 1824 and
1828. He died
14 May 1857 and is buried in the Rush Family Cemetery in
Otto,
Macon County, NC. Assuming this information is correct, (that
John Calvin was the son of a John Sellers who was a blacksmith in
Haywood County and is buried there),  then I don't think our lines are
connected in this way.

You did mention a Conrad, which is interesting in that there was a
Conrad Sellers who appears in the
Lincoln County census in 1790, 1800,
and 1810. From these three censuses he would seem to have been born
between 1756 and 1764, and his eldest son  was born between 1785 and
1790. In 1820 there is a "Coonrod Selars" in the Haywood Co. census,
very likely the same man. This is probably your John Blacksmith's
father. I have never been able to figure out how he might be related to
my George and John. George and John were listed in the probate record
of their father Philip, along with all of their siblings (none of whom
were named Conrad). Conrad may be a cousin, since there were a lot of
Sellers of German descent in
Pennsylvania in the 1700s.

You mentioned John Calvin being born in Limestone Springs; do you know
what County that was in? It doesn't show up in either the Rootsweb Town
Finder or in the US GNIS.

I hope this info helps. I would love to hear if you can find some
connection between Conrad and my George and John Sellers.

Good luck,
Mel Green
.....................................................

Mel,
It looks like a few things you mentioned are matching.
Olena was doing a lot of remembering in her letter to Mama. She was waiting for documentation from another younger John Sellers. Olena is no longer living.

I looked back at the handwriting on the letter and it does say Coonrod. I had never heard of such a name so I decided it was Conrad. I should know better.

Limestone Springs is just below
Sanford, NC. See MAPQUEST. That would have been in Hanover Co. I think. There is also a community called Sellers, NC not too far from there.

Let's stay in touch on this. I think it is looking pretty good so far. Do you have a website yet that I can look at? I am getting ready to put one up soon. I want to get it right though.

.................................................

Hi Marcella -

Boy, did your message stir up memories!  I haven't worked the SELLERS line in years!  Not that I haven't wanted to - it just that other lines keep taking my time.  Thank you very much for sending me the information from that old letter!

I, too, corresponded with Olena Adams of
Elijay, GA, many years ago.  I still have some of her correspondence in my files.

My children are descended from Francis Conrad Sellers and his wife
Elizabeth __?__.  Their daughter, Elizabeth Sellers (abt 1796-1865) married Henry Rhodarmer (abt 1797-1836).  Elizabeth & Henry Rhodarmer have LOADS of descendants!!!!!!

Many years ago I compiled a book about the Henry Rhodarmer family.  A copy of that book is in several NC libraries:  Waynesville,
Asheville; also NC state Gen. Soc. library; NC archives; and Old Buncombe Gen. Soc., Asheville.

Interestingly, my youngest daughter (Roxanne/Rocky) is currently working on a complete update to my Rhodarmer book.

Marcella, have you been in touch with Carole Walker yet?  Back in 1999 she sent me a multi-page ahnentafel for the SELLERS family.

I am very interested in learning more about the SELLERS family.  Please keep in touch!

Sincerely,
Mary M. Brown
Washington state

That is what I am showing as the children of John "Blacksmith" Sellers.

Carole

Marcella,

Sorry I can't help much with the Sellers.  My niece married Sidney Livingston IV ( so there must have been a line of 3 before
him)  They do not want to be traced back on his line.

The other is Ida Elizabeth Sellers m. Ralph Patrick Butterworth probably in
Canton, Cherokee Co., GA. The Butterworth family is connected through my husband's family and that is all I have.

Isn't it amazing what we find at times? The myteries we have to solve.
I wish you luck.

God Bless,
Lynda

Hi Marcella,

I wandered through my database and did not find any links to the people you mention. However, the Sellers family is prominent in the
Hayward area of NC so there very well could be a link. I have an Annie Sellers marrying David B Sharp in 1850 ( David was a 2nd cousin. The connection to the family runs through the Joyce family lines for me) . The it jumps to Benjamin Franklin Sellers b 1872 and Martha Cogburn b. 1882

I have no data on the Sellers line any earlier than that. Of the family line I have, almost all still reside in Haywood Co, NC, but then the Texas move would have been prior to what I have.

I went to the church two weeks ago for the first time. My aunt told me about a church that was in a section called Mt. Olive. She said that it was called Sellars Town many years ago. It was on highway 110 off Interstate 85. Wayne wrote about the church and I think it must be the same place. My aunt went there years ago with my Uncle Joe, the eldest of her siblings. He has been dead since the 60' or 70's. She said there were many Sellars buried at the church that were related to us. Now, I need to find out if it was the same church that she visited years ago.

……………

Hi Marcella,

I do have a website at http://www.bonanzajellydog.com/  I was assuming
that that was why you contacted me, so I didn't mention it in my letter
back to you. May I ask how you found my email if you didn't find it
there?

About the Coonrod/Conrad detail, I have seen more spellings than that
of this name (Coonrad, Conrod, Conrood, Cunrad, etc.). It was probably
pronounced a little differently back then, but I think it's fine to
lump them all together under the name Conrad.

I did the research on Conrad in the hopes of connecting him to my
Sellers, but was never able to do so. I really think any connection
lies back in Pennsylvania. The reason I don't think he is a brother of
George and John is that when their father died intestate in 1808,
another brother went to the probate court to settle the land. He listed
his fourteen brothers and sisters there, including Philip's two eldest
sons, John and George, then living in North Carolina. As I mentioned
earlier, none of these siblings were named Conrad. If he named George
and John living in North Carolina, then it seems he would have also
named Conrad were he related. I do think he may be a cousin, since that
name pops up in Pennsylvania Sellers' lines.

I don't have a lot on the Pennsylvania Sellers up on my website yet (no
collateral lines so far), but others have done research there. Check out
http://showcase.netins.net/web/sellerfamily/ for more info...

Well, I found the link to the Sellers family. Benjamin Franklin Sellers b. 6 Oct 1872 was the furthest back I had. I have tied him to James Leonard Sellers b. 22 May 1852 married to Mary Jane Andrews b 4 Sep 1846. Jame's father was Henry Sellers b 1825 and mother Rebecca Prince b 4 Nov 1822. This fits with one of the lists you sent along:

John "Blacksmith Sellers, Sr., was born 1789, died 1859 in Haywood County, North Carolina.  He married Sarah Christopher.  She was born 1794 and died 1854 in Haywood County, North Carolina.

Their children that I know of are:
1.  Ruth Sellers, b. 1890, d. 1878
2.  John Sellers, Jr., b. 1818, d. November 28, 1839, Mt. Airy, Habersham County, Georgia.  He married Jane Prince.
3.  Margaret Sellers, b. 1814, d. 1891.  She married Jones Jenkins.
4.  Mary Sellers, b. March 31, 1818, d. 1883.  She married Ephraim Christopher.
5.  Conrad Sellers, CSA, b. 1820, he d. January 15, 1864 in Civil War.  He married Artimissia "Arta" M. Prince.
6.  Ann Sellers, b. October 27, 1822, d. July 8, 1901.  She married David Sharp.
7.  Henry Sellers, b. 1825, d. October 22, 1888, in Mt. Airy, Habersham County, Georgia.  He married Rebecca Prince.
8.  Leonard Sellers, b. 1827.
9.  Sarah Sellers, b. 1828, d. 1889.
10.  Jacob Sellers, b. 1830, d. 1864, Camp Douglas, Illinois (Civil War).
11.  Ephraim Sellers, b. 1832, d. 1888 in Mt. Airy, Habersham County, Georgia.  He married Sarah E. Prince.

SELLERS IN GEORGIA
For more than 160 years, England and the Spanish played a gigantic
game of chess with the dominance of Georgia as the prize.  This continued from 1540 to
early in 1700.
When South Carolina became a royal province in 1732, the land between the
Savannah and the St. Mary's Rivers was set aside for a new British colony.
It was common practice in England at that time to imprison individuals
unable to pay their debts.  This practice irked a humanitarian army office and member
of Parliament, James Oglethorpe, who conceived the idea of rehabilitating
these poor people by taking them to the New World, giving them a tract of land and
assisting and guiding them in establishing their homes.  He induced King George II to
grant to him and twenty other men the English territory south of the Savannah River.
James Oglethorpe arrived with thirty-five families in 1733 and
established a community at the mouth of the Savannah River, which he called Savannah.
Halfway between the mouth of the Savannah River and the southern border of South Carolina
they established Augusta in 1734.  Persecuted Protestants in Europe were invited
to come to the colony.  Originally Roman Catholics were refused entrance in the new
country.
By 1738 Swiss, German, Italian, Scottish Highlanders, Salzburger, and
Moravian settlers had arrived in Georgia.  In 1739 a community called Frederica was
established on the south banks of the Altamaha.  Two years later Georgia was divided
into two counties - north of the Altamaha was called Savannah County and south of
the river was called Frederica County.
Many Moravians had come from North Carolina to Spring Place and New
Echota, but when they were unsuccessful in their desire to convert the Indians to their
faith, they removed from Georgia to Bethlehem and Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
Many of the Presbyterians who came to Georgia as Scottish Highlanders
settled in Darien, which they called New Inverness.  In 1752 a group of Massachusetts
Puritans came to Midway.
Georgia became a royal province in 1732. The colony claimed all of the
land between North Carolin and Florida, and the Atlantic Ocean and the
Mississippi River.
The first counties in Georgia were formed in 1777.  These counties
covered only a fraction of the land claimed by the province. In 1790 there were eleven
counties:  Franklin, Wilkes, Greene, Richmond, Burke, Washington, Effingham, Chatham,
LibertyGlynn and Camden..
In 1798 the Territory of Mississippi was created from the western half
of GeorgiaLater that territory was formed into the states of Alabama and Mississippi.
Many settlers in Virginia and the Carolinas were attracted to Georgia
by the early land lotteries.  Families who had lived in the territory for at least one
year were permitted to draw for acreages as large as 400 acres. These lotteries were
held in 1803, 1806, 1819, 1827 and 1832.
Georgia became the 4th state on 02 Jan 1788.

Dear Marcella,

In looking through some old e-mails I came across Carole's list of the children of John Sellers. I notice it does not contain John Calvin Sellers??? I assume the "Coonrod" actually is "Conrad, " as in her list. Should John Calvin as well as John, Jr. be listed.

My ancestor was Abraham Sellers, who married Mary Norwood.
